WE BACK AND WE BACK AND WE BACK AND WE BACK
Pop Off, it’s the WNBA’s opening day coming live from IMG Academy in Bradeton, Florida and we have a full slate starting at noon EST. After an insanely exciting offseason with a new CBA and entire rosters almost turning over anticipation is at an all time high for the WNBA season. With an eventful trip to IMG with numerous marquee players opting to sit out, many thought we wouldn’t even have a season. Thankfully they were wrong as we tip off today with three games. I am the stimulus the government doesn’t want you to know about so I’m going to attempt to come out of the gate with three winners.
Game 1: Seattle Storm (-11.5) vs New York Liberty at 12:00 PM EST. Over/Under 153.5
The biggest headline of day 1 of the WNBA season is today is the first day of Sabrina Ionescu’s WNBA career. Many, including myself, believe she will be a transcendent star in the WNBA. However, don’t let uniformed skells like Shea Serrano influence your decision making. Point blank, the Liberty suck and even with Ionescu they’re going to have a very difficult season and she will likely take a while to get used to the league. Unless you’re Candace Parker and have the ability to pop off for 33 points in your rookie debut, most rookies struggle to adapt. The Liberty’s post is insanely weak after dealing Tina Charles and I think the Storm will bully them all afternoon. In the immediate future, the Liberty’s future rests solely on the shoulders of Kia Nurse and Ionescu, and unless they can both put up 30 a game, this team is just not going to score a lot of points.
On the other side of the court, the Storm are one of the scariest teams going into this season. Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart return from injuries and particularly for Stewart if she can pick up where she left off the Storm will be a favorite to win a title. They’re deep everywhere. Bird’s absence allowed Jordin Canada to gain experience while Stewart’s absence allowed Mercedes Russell to gain experience. This team is deep af especially after adding veteran Epiphany Prince and Morgan Tuck. Personally, I think Seattle will be a great re-start opportunity for Tuck after she never was able to make the impact many expected her to make in Connecticut. I was hoping this line would be closer to -9.5 but it don’t matter the Storm are going to roll. There’s just too much uncertainty for the Liberty with a new head coach and no depth down low.
Storm by a million, lock it in.
Game 2: LA Sparks (-2.5) vs Phoenix Mercury 3:00 PM EST Over/Under 152.0
I’ll keep it simple, both these teams are really good and will contend for a championship. Why is this is the lowest total of the day? I have absolutely no idea. Lock it in.
LA/Phoenix Over 152.O
Both of these teams got a lot better in the off-season with Phoenix adding Skylar Diggins-Smith and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough while LA added Brittany Sykes and Kristi Tolliver (sadly did not make the trip to IMG). I’m very interested to see how these teams rosters end up looking and I expect both teams to put up points. I’m shocked this is the lowest total of the day.
Game 3: Indiana Fever vs Washington Mystics (-2.0) Over/Under 163.0
This pick will shock my followers but it’s a depth chart special.
The Mystics have been absolutely decimated this off-season.
Latoya Sanders and Natasha Cloud initially said they won’t be playing due to COVID-19 concerns. Elena Delle Donne famously has gotten into a dispute with the WNBA over medical exemption due to Lymes disease where many believe she won’t play this season while the Mystics got fleeced trading Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and two draft picks away for Tina Charles. On top of all this, the Mystics also lost Kristi Tolliver to LA. Point blank, this team is not the same team that lifted the title last year. Indiana returns their whole team in a largely uneventful offseason outside of firing head coach Pokey Chapman and hiring Marianne Stanley.
Victoria Vivians returns from injury and with the additions of Lauren Cox, optimistically I think the Fever will have a much improved season. Teairra McCowan quietly finished last season making a big impact for the Fever and I expect her to be a breakout star this year.
I’m going with the team who experienced little change. Lock it in.
TJ Leaf fucked us in my last pick, today we turn things around on opening day. We’re getting crazy with picks on every game.
Lock em in
LA/Phoenix Over 152
Just the Tip’s Record ATS: 31-19
